CHAPTER FOURTEEN

My mouth hung open, slack-jawed like a fish yanked from the water.

I hired the woman who made Harvey’s tea?

Even more concerning was that Deedee was now serving coffee at Whisks and Whiskers.

“Does Erin know about this?” I asked Bonnie.

She shrugged, looking slightly irritated. “I don’t know, I rarely talk to her. I’m sure the cops will tell her if it’s an issue.” Bonnie looked at her phone and stepped away from us. “Speaking of cops, I'm going to ask about a restraining order.”

Bonnie rounded the bar area, already talking on her phone.

I faced Michael again. “Do you think it’s an ‘issue’ that Deedee is working for Erin now? Or for me?”

“I don’t think Deedee killed Harvey. She’s too…sweet.”

“‘Sweet’ isn’t the first word I’d use to describe her. I think you meant to say, she’s too pretty to kill someone,” I teased. “Right?”

Michael laughed. “Pretty isn’t the right word either. How about hot? Or smokin’ hot.”

I rolled my eyes. “Not all criminals are ugly, you know. Can you think of any reason Deedee would have killed Harvey?”

“Not really.”

“So they got along well?”

“Pretty much. Though it was clear Harvey’s flirtatious behavior annoyed her. One day, she got fed up with his advances and she intentionally knocked over an entire tub of tapioca bubbles. They went everywhere. I still find bubbles around the café.”

“I’m surprised Harvey let her keep her job.”

“He said her fiery temper was ‘cute.’ He didn’t fire her, but instead gave her the dreaded early-morning shift—permanently. I'm sure Deedee wasn't pleased with that decision, but it's not like it'd be enough to drive someone to murder.”

“Unless you’re a psycho,” I countered.

“You mean, a smokin’ hot psycho,” he laughed. His gaze drifted out the window, his expression sobering. “A lot of people disliked Harvey, but Leo despised him. Every time Leo came in here yelling about how the barking disturbed guests at his bed and breakfast, his hatred was obvious.”

I checked my watch. “When’s your next break? I have an errand to run and was hoping you could join me.”

Michael furrowed his brows. “What errand? And what’s up with the sneaky look on your face?”

“I want to tour Leo’s bed and breakfast, just in case I ever need somewhere to stay close by.”

“No way. Remember what happened the last time you talked me into snooping around, when we snuck out at midnight and went to Miss Tutter’s property because we thought she was a werewolf?”

I winced at the memory. “That wasn’t my merriest of Christmases. But Miss Tutter wouldn’t have caught us if you hadn’t worn a neon orange shirt. You should’ve worn a black one like I told you to.”

He held up his hands. “My snooping days are over. I learned my lesson. You, apparently, did not.”

“Oh, come on! We were ten. Now we’re older and much wiser snoops.”

Michael turned towards the bar area, but I grabbed hold of his arm. “It’s in your best interest we find out who killed Harvey. I know Dennis has been questioning you.”

He shrugged indifferently.
